I’ve worked with women from their twenties into their seventies, and one thing I know for certain: your wardrobe should evolve with you. Too often, I meet clients in their forties and fifties who are still dressing for the body they had a decade ago — or, worse, hiding the body they have now under layers that don’t do them justice.
Your body changes in midlife. Hips shift, waistlines soften, shoulders may round a little. That doesn’t mean your style has to suffer. In fact, this is the perfect time to refine it.
Step One: Know Your Current Shape
Forget the size label — it’s meaningless across brands. Instead, look in the mirror (or better yet, get a trusted friend or professional to take a photo) and identify your silhouette.
When I work with clients, I usually see one of five shapes:
- Hourglass – Shoulders and hips are balanced with a defined waist.
- Pear – Hips are wider than shoulders.
- Apple – Fuller through the midsection with slimmer legs.
- Rectangle – Bust, waist, and hips are fairly uniform.
- Inverted Triangle – Shoulders are broader than hips.
I’m not putting you in a box. I’m giving you a starting point for proportion — the foundation of style.
Dressing to Your Advantage
Here’s a trick: dress the part of your body you like most. Pear shapes often love their waist — so cinch it. Apples usually have great legs — show them off. Rectangles can create curves with structure, and inverted triangles can soften the top half with fluid fabrics.
For example, one of my clients, a brilliant corporate lawyer in her late forties, swore she “had nothing to wear” because she hated her hips. We swapped her clingy pencil skirts for A-line styles and added soft draped blouses. Two weeks later she sent me a selfie before a meeting — she looked taller, slimmer, and ten years younger. Same woman, same body — different approach.
Fabric and Fit Are Everything
Cheap fabrics show every lump and bump. Too-heavy fabrics make you look boxy. Midlife wardrobes benefit from structured materials (they hold shape and smooth the body) and draping fabrics (that skim rather than cling).
If a piece doesn’t fit, it’s not you — it’s the garment. Alterations are a midlife woman’s best friend. A £20 adjustment can make a high-street jacket look custom-made.
Colour Strategy
Neutrals are reliable, but don’t live in black — it can be harsh on mature skin. Navy, charcoal, camel, and soft white are kinder. Then, introduce colour near your face. I’ve seen a coral scarf or cobalt blouse do more for a client’s complexion than a $150 facial.
A Word on Style Ruts
Many women tell me they “don’t have time to shop” and default to the same five outfits. That’s fine — as long as those five outfits make you feel amazing. If they don’t, it’s time to update one piece at a time. Add a new jacket shape. Try a bold necklace. Swap trainers for loafers. Small shifts keep you current without feeling like a makeover victim.
Style in midlife isn’t about looking younger — it’s about looking like the very best version of you, right now. When your clothes fit your shape and personality, you stop thinking about what you’re wearing. You just walk into the room and own it.
