At some point between your 40s and 60s, a quiet but powerful question begins to surface:
“What’s next?”
Not because life is over, not even close. But because you’ve lived long enough to realize something:
Time is precious. Autopilot is dangerous.
And you don’t want the next 10 years to be a repeat of the last 10 if they weren’t aligned.
So, pause with me for a moment.
Forget what you’ve been told you should want.
Set aside what other people expect of you.
Instead, ask: “What do I want my next 10 years to feel like?”
Because the feeling is the real goal. And that’s what we’re going to design from, right here, right now.
Why “Feeling” Matters More Than “Achievements”
When people are asked what they want in life, they often say things like:
• “I want to retire early.”
• “I want to run my own business.”
• “I want to travel more.”
But when you dig deeper, those aren’t the true goals. They’re vehicles.
What they really want is what they believe those things will give them:
• Freedom
• Peace
• Excitement
• Confidence
• Purpose
That’s why we start with feelings. Because success without joy, freedom, or connection? Still feels empty.
Step 1: Reflect on the Last 10 Years (With Compassion)
Before designing the future, glance at the past.
Ask yourself:
• What did the last 10 years feel like overall?
• What were the highlights? What brought you alive?
• What drained you or felt misaligned?
• What lessons did you learn that you don’t want to forget?
No shame. No judgment. Just truth. This gives you data, not for regret, but for redirection.
“Your past doesn’t define you, but it can inform your design.”
Step 2: Choose Your 3 Core Feelings
Now close your eyes and imagine:
It’s 10 years from now. You wake up, stretch, and smile. Your life feels right.
Ask:
• How do I feel in my body?
• What’s the rhythm of my days?
• How do I feel about work, love, health, purpose?
Now, write down 3 core feelings you want your next chapter to be rooted in.
Examples:
• Grounded
• Energized
• Liberated
• Creative
• Loved
• At peace
• Bold
• Alive
• Aligned
These feelings become your guiding lights. Every decision going forward can be filtered through them.
Step 3: Clarify What Needs to Stay, Shift, or Go
Now look at your current life and ask:
• What supports those core feelings? (Keep it.)
• What’s neutral but could be improved? (Tweak it.)
• What actively blocks those feelings? (Release it.)
You don’t have to overhaul your life. You just need to start adjusting it toward alignment.
This is where clarity becomes power. Because without it, you’ll keep saying “yes” to things that lead you away from the life you actually want.
Step 4: Paint a Picture—Not a To-Do List
Instead of jumping to goals like “Lose 10kg” or “Make X income,” start with vision.
Describe your ideal day 10 years from now:
• Where are you waking up?
• How does your body feel?
• What kind of work are you doing (if any)?
• What fills your time, attention, and energy?
• Who’s around you?
• What kind of conversations, challenges, and joys are present?
Let this be a creative, sensory vision, not a spreadsheet. You’re not “planning” here. You’re connecting.
This is where most people get stuck. They design futures based on obligation instead of authenticity.
Common “shoulds”:
• “I should aim for a promotion—even if I hate my job.”
• “I should retire soon—even if I’m not ready.”
• “I should be grateful and not want more.”
Let them go.
“Design a life that feels good on the inside, not just one that looks good on the outside.” — Unknown
Your future is yours. Make sure it reflects you, not a checklist someone else handed you.
Step 6: Choose a Theme Word or Phrase
One of the simplest but most powerful tools in future design is a theme word or phrase.
This becomes your anchor, your reminder of what you’re creating.
Examples:
• Ease and Expansion
• Bolder, Not Busier
• Rooted and Radiant
• Less Noise, More Meaning
• Peace Over Pressure
Write it down. Put it on your desk. On your fridge. On your phone. Let it guide your daily choices.
Step 7: Break It Down—One Feeling, One Action
Once you’ve picked your 3 core feelings, ask:
“What’s one small thing I can do this week to feel more of this?”
Let’s say one feeling is alive:
• You could take a dance class
• Go hiking
• Eat something you’ve never tried
• Say yes to something spontaneous
If the feeling is grounded:
• Start journaling again
• Cut back on chaotic commitments
• Schedule quiet time each morning
Tiny choices shape the tone of your future. It doesn’t happen in a leap, it happens in steps.
Step 8: Surround Yourself With “Next Chapter Energy”
Your environment matters.
Ask:
• Who is already living in a way that inspires me?
• Who supports the person I’m becoming, not just the person I’ve been?
• What books, podcasts, or spaces light that future fire in me?
Your next 10 years will be shaped partly by who and what you let near your mind. Choose carefully.
Step 9: Let It Evolve (That’s the Point)
You’re not locking in a rigid plan. You’re creating a direction, not a destination.
Your vision might evolve as you do. That’s a good thing.
What matters is that you keep checking in:
“Is this still aligned?”
“Do I still feel how I want to feel?”
The best-designed lives aren’t fixed. They’re flexible, responsive, and alive, just like you.
Final Word: You Have More Power Than You Think
Most people drift. They hope life will magically change. But in midlife, you’ve been given a gift – awareness. A moment to pause, look forward, and say: “What if I design this next chapter on purpose?”
It doesn’t matter what you’ve done before. It doesn’t matter if you’re behind schedule or off-track.
What matters is what you choose now.
So let me ask again:
What do you want your next 10 years to feel like?
Not what they should look like. Not what others expect. What they should feel like. Start there.
And take one bold, gentle step in that direction.
